Vegetable based or renewable based water-mix coolants have become more available in the last few years.

Vegetable based lubricants have some inherent advantages in the high lubricating properties they exhibit giving excellent tool-life, surface finish etc. However the natural bio-degradability of the fats / oils make the products more likely to degrade. The degradation can be inhibited against with the use of biocides but this makes the attractiveness of a natural based product a dent.

Most renewable based products have less than 50% renewable components, and with the concern over food costs due to the use of oils and fats in non-food applications it maybe a more environmentally acceptable route to use water-mix metal working fluids which have superior sump life and therefore require less disposal than using something based on natural esters. This is a complex area and anyone considering environmental factors need to consider the total environmental cost of using and disposing of metalworking coolants.

Suppliers of these advanced metal working fluids are Fuchs, Houghton, Castrol etc
