Vanishing Oils are lubricants based on a volatile component (solvent) and additives to give lubrication properties. The solvent component have traditionally been odourless kerosene which give a non-flammable labelled product with slow drying or white spirit / distillate which gives a faster drying but flammable labelled product. The lubricant additives traditionally included such additives as vegetable oils for lubricity, chlorinated paraffin's for extreme pressure performance and perhaps additives to enhance corrosion inhibition. Most lubricant suppliers have these traditional type vanishing oils. However with the requirements of the manufacturing sector becoming more challenging the old technology vanishing oils have been superseded by advanced vanishing oils. Advanced Technology vanishing oil are designed with the following features:-
Advanced vanishing oils are supplied by the following companies and available in the UK. John Neale Ltd, QSCD. Most other suppliers of advanced vanishing oils are German or USA based, a good German supplier is Wilke lubricants. A new development in vanishing oils is the use of thermally degreasing additives to give lubricants which can be degreased with heat. These are useful where a powder coating or paint process using a heat cure follows pressing. It allows for components not to be degreased prior to the painting operation with the lubricant residue evapourating in the curing oven with no adverse effect on the paint. These lubricants can be used with enamelling steels, and other mild steels and steel alloys.
