Neat Cuttings Oils come in various types:-
Traditional chlorine containing neat cutting oils
There isn't much to say about these, there have been a general trend to
group II base oils away from Group I and lower odour and lighter coloured
additives, but generally these products have changed little in the last
40years. Selection of an appropriate product is dependant as always on the
metals being machined and the severity of the operation. These products are
best bought from local low cost suppliers. We can offer specific advice if
required.
Traditional chlorine-free neat cutting oils.
These products are now well established in the market. They haven't been
broadly adopted in the UK market as there is little reason to use them
except slightly higher waste disposal costs. Most machining applications can
be done with chlorine-free technology. The main reason for slow up-take is
high price. Chlorine-free lubricants are again broadly available and our
recommendation is that they are bought from low cost local suppliers. We can
offer formulation advice for all types of chlorine-free lubricants.
Advanced 'synthetic oil' neat cutting oils.
These products offer some significant benefits over traditional neat
oils. One of the key areas of benefit is the high flash point for a given
viscosity. For grinding applications and other operations where low
viscosity are preferred the higher flash point gives less fumes and lower
fire risk. These synthetic oils also have better oxidation and thermal
stability and better response to additives. If better performance is a
requirement then the extra cost of this technology will be worth
investigating. They are not broadly available however as uptake is fairly
narrow.
Renewable based neat cutting oils.
These are products where environmental concern is the uppermost. Most
products should contain a high degree of renewable components, but be
prepared to ask for evidence and specific information. Machining performance
can be very good but thermal and oxidative stability do need to be
considered. Natural based products are poor in this are.
Synthetic ester based neat cutting oils.
These are the very best neat cutting oils on the market. The offer all
the performance benefits you would wish for. High performance, no mist
hazard, high flash point, lower fire risk, excellent thermal stability,
excellent oxidative stability, can be used for minimal and flood
applications. The only shame is the cost.
